California government’s policy decisions and lawmaking are often a necessary response to a crisis. Last year, the Legislature addressed California’s drought by regulating groundwater management, putting a water bond on the ballot and appropriating funds for water conservation. However, once legislation is signed into law and policy decisions are made, the work is far from over.
It is important that the Legislature embrace its role of oversight and review the implementation of new laws. Far too often, laws are passed in haste without consideration of unintended consequences. Legislative oversight is essential to create accountability and make sure that government meets the needs of its citizens.
